From soothing black teas to delicate green teas, Ceylon Tea continues to be a symbol of quality and heritage

A Journey Through History

The story of Ceylon Tea begins in the 19th century during British colonial times. Originally, Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon) was a thriving coffee-producing island. However, in the 1860s, a devastating leaf disease known as coffee rust wiped out most of the plantations. This crisis turned into a blessing in disguise when planters introduced tea as an alternative crop.

In 1867, James Taylor, a Scottish planter, laid the foundation of the Ceylon Tea industry by planting tea in Loolecondera Estate in Kandy. His success attracted more planters, and within decades, tea replaced coffee as the island’s main export. By the late 1800s, Ceylon had earned a global reputation for producing some of the finest teas in the world.

What Makes Ceylon Tea Special?

What makes Ceylon Tea truly special is the combination of its unique climate, traditional methods, and guaranteed authenticity. The island’s diverse elevations, from the misty central highlands to the warm low-grown regions, give each tea its own distinct flavor profile. Most of the tea is still carefully handpicked, ensuring that only the finest leaves are selected for production. To protect its reputation, genuine Ceylon Tea carries the famous “Lion Logo,” which certifies that the tea is packed in Sri Lanka and meets the highest standards of quality and purity.
